Music Discovery: July 2019

July 1, 2019 Kara Weinand

Hey there, I’m Leroy Henry, Senior Music Supervisor at PlayNetwork, recently celebrating my 20th year with the company. You hear a lot of people say, “music isn’t what it used to be” and “how can I find new stuff that I don’t know about?” That’s where we come in as music supervisors. I’m always searching high and low for songs that have good melody, interesting arrangements, good quality musicianship, clean and clear production, nice vocals, and maybe even a good message. Here are some of my favorites from the past few months and weeks I’d like to share with you. Hope you enjoy.

Artist: Jessy Wilson

Track: Clap Your Hands

This is the artist I’m most excited about right now – and if you think she sounds familiar, you’re right. She sang backup to Alicia Keys, was a big part of the Muddy Magnolias, and has worked with John Legend, her mentor. Imagine sassy, sultry vocals with a seductive beat meeting the gritty production of Black Keys drummer, Patrick Karney. Thanks to colleague Grady, for turning me onto this! Hands down, my favorite album of the year so far.

Artist: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

Track: This Thing

Twitter: @kinggizzardband

By far, my favorite band name in quite some time! From Australia, comes this zany, eclectic band that prefer not have any specific kind of style attached to their brand. They constantly change it up album to album and within the album itself. Psychedelic, eclectic rock serves the band well, I suppose. This Thing is straight-ahead blues-rock with a T-Rex twist, driving harmonica work and clever arrangements that promise to keep you entertained along the way. Hope you dig it.

Artist: Jim & Sam

Track: Calling It Quits

Twitter: @wearejimandsam

A beautifully produced duet on Nettwerk, from husband & wife team, Jim & Sam from Los Angeles. Both have full, open voices that blend together incredibly well and with a lot of charm and soul. Not only are they both gifted singers but they also specialize in editing, theater and more recently have ventured into film. They played 365 straight days which they captured in a documentary called After So Many Days which is showing at indie film festivals all over the world. The video below was recorded on day #32 of 365 days. See if you too are charmed.
